Amber Ellis: One Year On
In what’s been arguably the most difficult twelve months for working people everywhere, placement student reflects on the highlights of being part of the Informare team.
Completing an internship during a pandemic was definitely not what Communications Executive Amber Ellis anticipated when she first got in contact with Informare Managing Director Anna King. Throughout her placement year (as part of her degree with Bournemouth University), Amber has been lucky enough to still get involved with a variety of client activities, shows and tasks where possible.
Amber’s internship started just as pubs, bars and restaurants reopened in the UK and this was a great way to be introduced and get to know the now familiar faces of her team. She says, “It was a perfect month to start, as there was this wave of energy throughout the industry and London as a whole, now that places were opening up.”
Within the first few weeks, Amber had got stuck in with social media, account management, press release writing and assisting with other project work.
“I really enjoyed the photo shoots because it gave me an opportunity to see the projects we were talking to the press about come to life,” she says. And since then, Amber has only continued to get involved in as much as possible throughout her placement.
Outside of the office environment, Amber has had the opportunity to explore London’s cultural scene, including visits to the Tate Modern and the Design Museum, as well as attending events during September’s London Design Festival. She also had the chance to take on her own project for Black History Month. “I had the opportunity to sit down and interview some fascinating people within the construction and design industries, to learn their stories and paths into their careers. This helped me feel more comfortable with new people, improved my interview technique and gave me a fresh perspective on developing my own career.”
While coming to the end of her internship, Amber has had the chance to continue her exploration of the industry, with journalist and Head of Content at Informare Helen Parton. Helen has been able to introduce Amber to local showrooms in Clerkenwell as well as explore some incredible examples of cutting edge architecture in London.
Over the last year, Amber has worked with a variety of clients in industries such as lighting, tech, construction and design. Summing up her experience, Amber says, “When I first enrolled at Bournemouth, I didn’t anticipate working across such a broad spread of sectors during my placement year but I’ve found it all really engaging and really appreciate the variety.” On her future plans, she says, “I am excited to be continuing with Informare while I return to my studies and am excited for more of the amazing opportunities there are to come.”
Amber would like to give a special thank you to her clients, the team at Informare as well as the support system available to her outside the office including: Susan McCollin-Davy, Jo Tandy and Rachel Little for providing Amber with a great first impression of the industry.
